The Filter Core

Domestic RO Plants

RO systems for homes, matched to your water quality and how much drinking water your family uses.

A home RO system gives you clean drinking water straight from a dedicated tap in your kitchen, without buying bottled water or relying on boiling alone.

How a home RO system works

Water passes through several stages, each with its own job:

  • Sediment filter: catches sand, rust and particles
  • Carbon filters: reduce chlorine, odours and some chemicals
  • RO membrane: removes most dissolved salts, metals and other contaminants
  • Post-treatment: optional UV, mineral or alkaline stages for safety and taste

Choosing the right size

Capacity is usually measured in gallons per day (GPD). The right capacity depends on your family size, how much water you drink and cook with, and your water pressure. We recommend a size based on your household rather than the biggest model available.

Under the sink or on the wall

Most home systems fit neatly under the kitchen sink with a dedicated tap on the counter. Where there is no space under the sink, a wall-mounted unit is a good alternative. We check the space and the drain and power points during the visit.

How it works

  1. Step 1: Check your water

A TDS reading or full test tells us what is needed.

  2. Step 2: Choose a system

We recommend stages and capacity for your home.

  3. Step 3: Install

Fitted under the sink or on the wall, then tested.

  4. Step 4: Maintain

Filters changed on schedule to keep water quality up.

Does RO remove healthy minerals?

RO removes most dissolved substances, including some minerals. Many RO systems therefore include a mineral or alkaline stage after the membrane to add some back and improve taste. We can explain the options when we recommend a system.

What is the difference between RO, UV and UF?
  • RO (reverse osmosis) pushes water through a very fine membrane that holds back most dissolved salts, metals and other contaminants. Suited to water with high TDS.
  • UV (ultraviolet) treats water with UV light to inactivate bacteria and viruses. It doesn’t remove dissolved substances.
  • UF (ultrafiltration) uses a membrane with larger pores than RO to remove particles, cloudiness and many microorganisms, without removing dissolved salts.

Many systems combine these stages. The right mix depends on your water.

Why does an RO system produce waste water?

The membrane needs a flow of water to carry away the salts it holds back, so some water goes to the drain. Many people reuse it for cleaning or plants. The ratio depends on the system and your water.

Our water pressure is low. Can we still have an RO system?

Yes. RO membranes need a certain pressure to work well, so where supply pressure is low a booster pump is normally added. We check the pressure during the visit.

How often should filters and the membrane be changed?

It depends on your water quality and how much you use. As a general guide, sediment and carbon pre-filters are often changed every few months, and RO membranes last longer. We’ll recommend a schedule based on your water and usage.
